Fans will soon have the opportunity to delve back into the world of Batman as conceptualized by Tim Burton through author John Jackson Miller’s upcoming work, Batman: Revolution. Published by Penguin Random House, this novel will serve as the second installment in Miller’s exploration of Burton’s acclaimed Batman film series, with a release date scheduled for October 21.

The original 1989 film, directed by Burton, was based on a screenplay crafted by Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren, introducing audiences to Michael Keaton’s celebrated portrayal of The Dark Knight. The film also starred Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale, Pat Hingle as Commissioner Gordon, Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent, Michael Gough as Alfred Pennyworth, and Jack Nicholson in the iconic role of the Joker. The film’s massive success, both critically and commercially, paved the way for several sequels, beginning with 1992’s Batman Returns, which marked Burton’s final entry in the series.

In the previous year, Miller released Batman: Resurrection, which presented readers with an alternate narrative aligning with the original Batman film saga. Set in the timeframe between the events of Batman and Batman Returns, the novel showcases multiple fan-favorite DC Comics villains, including Clayface, Hugo Strange, and the Riddler, who embarks on a notably different journey than audiences may be familiar with. As it stands, Batman: Resurrection boasts a commendable 4.06/5 rating on the popular review aggregator GoodReads, based on 355 user-submitted reviews.

In a prior endeavor, DC Comics released Batman ’89 in 2021, a follow-up to Burton’s iconic film. This series, penned by Sam Hamm and illustrated by Joe Quinones, picks up shortly after the events of Batman Returns, diverging significantly from the trajectory seen in films like Batman Forever. The initial six-issue run of Batman ’89 received widespread acclaim, leading to the development of a follow-up series entitled Batman ’89: Echoes. This series reintroduced classic characters while also crafting fresh takes on personas such as Scarecrow, and provided significant narratives for newer characters like Drake Winston, who steps into the Robin role, paying homage to early plans involving Marlon Wayans.

Batman: Revolution is slated for release on October 21 by Penguin Random House.
