DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn has put an end to rumors surrounding a new DCU project, specifically regarding the much-anticipated debut of Nightwing. The acclaimed director of Superman and creator of Peacemaker addressed speculation around a new HBO Max series featuring the character, delivering disappointing news to fans.

The rumor originated from a post by the Home of DCU account on X (formerly Twitter), which displayed a screenshot that appeared to confirm a new Nightwing project in development for HBO Max, captioned, “HBO Max seemingly confirms Nightwing coming to the DCU (as expected).” A subsequent inquiry by another user further speculated about the character’s potential appearance.
In response, Gunn swiftly dismissed the rumor, stating, “I don’t know what that is supposed to be or who put that up on the platform, but it’s meaningless.” This clarification puts to rest the hopes of fans eager to see Nightwing integrated into the evolving DC cinematic landscape.
There was significant anticipation for Nightwing’s involvement in the new DCU, especially with actors like Asher Angel, known for his role as Billy Batson in Shazam!, expressing interest in portraying the acrobatic hero Dick Grayson. Angel stated, “I spend a lot of time watching fancastings. I have a favorite. Obviously, the Nightwing.” Fans seemed to hope this would be reflected in upcoming projects, including Gunn’s planned title, The Brave and the Bold.
As of mid-September, Gunn has not officially confirmed any projects featuring Nightwing. His direct comments suggest that no announcements regarding the character’s introduction are imminent. Fans theorize that Nightwing might eventually appear in the forthcoming Batman film, The Brave and the Bold, which is currently in development.
The Brave and the Bold, announced in January 2023 as part of DCU’s initial slate, plans to draw inspiration from the acclaimed “Batman and Son” storyline by writer Grant Morrison and artist Andy Kubert. Historically, Nightwing has been voiced by Loren Lester in the animated film Batman and Harley Quinn and by Scott Menville in the animated series Teen Titans.
While The Brave and the Bold continues to generate excitement, fans also speculate about the potential for Nightwing’s involvement in other projects, such as the live-action Teen Titans movie. However, as of now, that project appears to be in early development, with expectations for a script written by Ana Nogueira, who previously worked on the upcoming Supergirl, scheduled for a 2026 release.
The next installment in the Batman-themed cinematic universe, Clayface, is slated for release on September 11, 2026, further expanding the rich tapestry of DC storytelling.
