Prime Video has officially renewed Carrie, the television adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel, for a second season. This announcement comes just two weeks after the eight-episode first season premiered on October 7, earning strong reviews and sparking significant global interest.
Starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, the series has quickly become a hit, topping Prime Video’s global TV series rankings since its launch and reaching No. 1 in over 105 countries. While the streaming service has yet to release official viewership figures, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
The renewal provides an exciting opportunity to expand on a storyline that notably diverged from King’s original novel. Instead of concluding with Carrie’s tragic fate, the season ended with the telekinetic teenager riding in the passenger seat of her friend Emaline’s (played by Thalia Dudek) car, setting off for an unspecified destination.
Executive produced by Mike Flanagan and Stephen King, the first season follows Carrie White, a socially isolated high school student raised by an overprotective mother, Margaret (portrayed by Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s untimely death compels her to attend public high school, Carrie faces a devastating bullying scandal that affects her entire community. As she navigates the cruelty of her peers and the pressures of social media, her mysterious telekinetic powers begin to manifest alongside her coming-of-age challenges.
Mike Flanagan expressed that the creative team always envisioned a narrative that would extend beyond the familiar prom events associated with Carrie. He stated, “For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next.”
Stephen King similarly shared his excitement for the continuation of this adaptation, hinting at further developments in Carrie’s journey in the upcoming season. “I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling,” King remarked.
The second season is expected to introduce new revelations, significant character developments, and unexpected twists as the narrative picks up from the first season’s cliffhanger.
As of now, Prime Video has not announced a release date or additional casting details for the highly anticipated Season 2.
