DC Celebrates Black Lightning’s 50th Anniversary With New Comic Book Special

Date:

DC Comics is commemorating the 50th anniversary of Black Lightning with DC Power: Black Lightning 50th Anniversary Special, a 48-page one-shot set to release on January 27, 2027. This special aims to honor Jefferson Pierce’s legacy while continuing his narrative within the DC Universe.

The primary storyline is penned by Jenny Isabella and Brandon Thomas, with captivating art by Fico Ossio. In this installment, Black Lightning finds himself responsible for protecting Metropolis during Superman’s absence. However, he must confront an old adversary who has schemed against him, leading to challenges that demand more than just brute force to overcome.

Moreover, the special delves into Jefferson’s personal life, particularly his relationship with his ex-wife, Lynn Stewart. It showcases his struggle to juggle his superhero duties with family challenges.

Exploring Connections

The issue will also highlight Black Lightning’s ties to the broader DC Universe. Jefferson will team up with the Outsiders, featuring notable characters such as Katana, the Signal, and Cassandra Cain. Additionally, readers will witness his reconnection with his daughters, Anissa and Jennifer Pierce. The appearance of Mr. Terrific and Steel further enriches the narrative, exploring the relationships that have influenced the hero over the past fifty years. A potential mentorship role for Jefferson with a new young hero is also teased.

Creative Team Insights

Jenny Isabella, co-creator of Black Lightning alongside artist Trevor Von Eeden, expressed her excitement about revisiting the character and collaborating with fresh talent in the industry. “I’m excited about the special,” Isabella stated. “As the old lady of the team, I get to work with a bunch of talented ‘youngsters’ who love and respect my creation.”

Brandon Thomas, who joins Isabella in writing, described working with Black Lightning’s co-creator as a surreal experience. He emphasized that the special’s central theme revolves around love—for Jefferson’s family, his history, and his role in the DC Universe.

Cover Art and Availability

The anniversary issue will feature a main cover illustrated by Edwin Galmon and Andrew Dalhouse, along with a selection of variant covers by artists including Fico Ossio and Tamra Bonvillain, Trevor Von Eeden and Chris Sotomayor, plus Cully Hamner, whose design will glow in the dark.

Black Lightning, created by writer Tony Isabella and artist Trevor Von Eeden, first appeared in 1977, making history as DC’s first African American superhero to lead his own comic book series. Typically depicted as an educator and father, Jefferson Pierce utilizes his powers to control electricity in his ongoing mission to protect his community. Since his debut, the character has become a staple in the DC Universe, featuring in a multitude of comic titles and adaptations, including the well-regarded CW series Black Lightning, which aired from 2018 to 2021.
