What We’re Seeing

Pixar has officially reclaimed the top spot at the box office with Toy Story 5, which opened to an estimated $160 million domestic debut, the largest opening weekend in franchise history and one of the strongest openings of 2026. The film easily surpassed the opening weekend of Toy Story 4 and demonstrates that audiences still have a strong connection to Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang.

Outside of Pixar’s massive success, the rest of the top ten paints an interesting picture of the current theatrical landscape. Original films continue to find audiences, with Disclosure Day holding strong in second place and Obsession adding another impressive weekend to its already substantial domestic run. Horror also continues to be one of the most reliable genres in theaters, as audiences consistently support fresh concepts when the word of mouth is strong.

For collectors and toy fans, this weekend’s chart is particularly noteworthy. Toy Story 5, Masters of the Universe, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu all landed in the top ten, reinforcing the continued strength of toy and collectible-driven entertainment brands. While Masters of the Universe has not reached the heights many fans hoped for, the film continues to add to its domestic total and remains a key property to watch as merchandise and collector products continue rolling out.

Meanwhile, Disney’s presence remains strong with two films in the top ten, while A24 continues to prove it can compete with major studios thanks to the performance of both Backrooms and The Death of Robin Hood.

As always, the real story will be in the coming weeks. The challenge for Toy Story 5 is no longer opening big. The question now is whether it can maintain momentum and become one of the highest-grossing films of the year.

Editor’s Note: Weekend grosses are based on Sunday studio estimates reported June 21, 2026. Final figures will be released and updated when available.
