Nintendo Turns Tariff Refunds Into 30% Customer Sale as Collectors Question Where Other Refunds Are Going

Date:

Nintendo is putting at least some of its massive tariff refund back into the hands of customers, through lower prices.

Nintendo of America has announced a major Customer Appreciation Sale, offering 30% off dozens of Nintendo Switch digital games and bundles, along with additional savings on select physical games, downloadable content, accessories, amiibo and apparel.

The promotion is scheduled to run September 13 through September 26 through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store and participating retailers.

What makes this sale particularly interesting is where some of the money supporting it is coming from: tariff refunds.

Nintendo says the Customer Appreciation Sale was made possible in part by tariff-related refunds, providing a rare example of a major entertainment company publicly connecting money recovered from tariffs with a promotion benefiting its customers.

Nintendo Received Hundreds of Millions Back

Nintendo has recorded approximately $300 million in tariff refunds following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision striking down tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

The company has maintained that it absorbed most of its tariff-related costs rather than directly passing all of those expenses to consumers. Nintendo has also argued in ongoing litigation that its pricing decisions involved several factors beyond tariffs, including labor, shipping and memory costs.

Now, however, at least some of that recovered money is helping support a significant consumer promotion.

For collectors and gamers who have watched prices climb throughout the hobby and entertainment industries, that’s noteworthy.

What About the Toy Industry?

Nintendo’s decision also raises a question increasingly being asked across retail and the collectibles industry:

If companies receive refunds for tariff costs that helped influence higher prices, how much of that money should eventually make its way back to consumers?

Hasbro disclosed earlier this year that it recognized approximately $44.9 million in tariff costs during 2025 and was evaluating its ability to seek refunds following the Supreme Court ruling.

That makes Hasbro particularly interesting to action figure collectors who have experienced significant price increases across several product categories in recent years.

If tariff-related expenses contributed to higher operating costs and ultimately higher prices, collectors will undoubtedly be watching to see whether future refunds result in price reductions, promotions or other savings.

Walmart and Target Are Also Cutting Prices

Nintendo isn’t completely alone.Walmart received approximately $2.9 billion in tariff refunds and has said it is reinvesting that money into lower prices, with thousands of products receiving rollbacks.

Target has also received nearly $1 billion in tariff refunds while reducing prices across thousands of products.

The larger question therefore isn’t whether any corporations are passing savings along. Some clearly are.

The question is how much consumers ultimately benefit compared with how much companies received back.

Collectors Will Be Watching

For toy collectors, that’s where this story becomes especially relevant.

Action figures, vehicles, statues and other collectibles have experienced repeated price increases, and tariffs were frequently discussed throughout the industry as another potential source of increased costs.

Nintendo’s Customer Appreciation Sale demonstrates one possible approach: take at least part of a tariff refund and turn it into an identifiable benefit for customers.

Now collectors will be watching companies throughout the toy industry, including Hasbro, to see whether they follow with meaningful promotions or price reductions of their own.

Nintendo’s message is simple: 30% off.

For collectors staring at increasingly expensive preorder carts, that is the kind of tariff-refund announcement they wouldn’t mind seeing from the toy industry next.
