Marvel Comics’ upcoming tribute to Pixar’s 40th Anniversary encompasses a series of special variant covers, offering collectors and fans a unique blend of beloved characters from two powerhouse franchises. This crossover is set to not only captivate enthusiasts but also drive interest in related merchandise and collectibles.
In recognition of Pixar’s significant milestone, Marvel has announced a collection of special variant covers that celebrate some of Pixar’s most acclaimed films. The initiative marks a noteworthy intersection of comic book culture and animation history, appealing to both comic book collectors and Pixar fans alike.
CBR previously reported that the variant cover for Fantastic Four #13, which is set to release on July 1, features the iconic cast of The Incredibles in a homage to a classic cover from 1975. Illustrated by artist David Baldéon, this reinterpretation showcases Pixar’s superhero family in place of the original heroes, aligning the worlds of comic books and animation.
Additionally, collectors can anticipate further “marvelous” covers inspired by Pixar’s most beloved films to be released throughout the summer season.
Artist Todd Nauck is also contributing to the celebration with a variant cover for Iron Man #7, featuring Wall-E—a character many believe embodies the ideal qualities of a hero—alongside EVE. This cover will be available on the same July 1 release date.
As part of the festivities, on July 15, David Bardin will unveil an alternate cover for Avengers: Armageddon #2, which creatively replaces Wonder Man with Riley Andersen from Inside Out, highlighting her inner emotions in a thought bubble.
On the same date, Humberto Ramos will showcase his unique take for Infernal Hulk #9, blending the gargantuan Hulk with the diminutive Remy from Ratatouille, exemplifying the playful melding of character scales.
The next phase of the celebration launches on August 5, introducing another variant cover connected to Marvel’s Fantastic Four. Nicoletta Baldari will reinterpret the cover of 1966’s Fantastic Four #49, featuring characters from A Bug’s Life, with Hopper standing in as Galactus, further expanding the collector’s palette.
Further variant covers set to release include an interpretation for Amazing Spider-Man #34 by Ryan Stegman, bringing the iconic web-slinger into new heights, influenced by Up.
Two weeks later, fans can look forward to Phil Noto’s cover for the third issue of Avengers: Armageddon, featuring Merida from Brave, showcased in a context that intertwines her narrative with the themes of archery familiar to fans of the comic.
Additionally, on August 19, Paco Medina will present a cover for Doomquest #4 that pays homage to Pixar’s latest film, Toy Story 5, coinciding with the film’s release two months earlier.
Marvel’s plans extend into September with four additional variant covers, including Avengers: Armageddon #4, Fantastic Four #16, and Thor #801, scheduled for September 2, and X-Men #37 arriving two weeks later. The details regarding the artists, the Pixar films being honored, and the classic covers that will inspire these editions remain to be disclosed.
Notably, Pixar, originally founded in 1986 and revered for producing the first feature film created entirely with CGI, has consistently pushed the envelope in animation, establishing itself as a dominant force in the industry as it celebrates its milestone and its continued influence over other media forms.
Marvel’s series of variant covers honoring Pixar’s legacy will begin to roll out on July 1.
