Lucas Museum at Comic-Con: Star Wars Animated Series 'Detours' to Screen

Keke Palmer, Senior Curator and Head of Film Programs at the Lucas Museum, was joined by Ryan Linkof, co-founders of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios Matthew Senreich and Seth Green, along with Jim Lee, President, Publisher, and CCO of DC, during the “Inside the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art” panel at Comic-Con. The announcement focused on the inclusion of curated episodes from the series, unveiled by Seth Green, who worked on ‘Detours’ with Senreich.

Initially conceived in the early 2010s, ‘Detours’ faced uncertainty following the Walt Disney Co.’s acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012. However, fans will finally have access to a selection of episodes, showcasing the evolutionary journey of Star Wars storytelling.

Linkof highlighted that the museum spans 100,000 square feet, featuring over 33 galleries and two theaters, which will continuously screen shorts and films. The Robert Flaherty Theater will focus on documentaries about influential artists, while the Slavko Vorkapich Theater aims to emphasize the intersection of motion and emotion through various media, including early silent films, classic animations, and notable works such as ‘Star Wars: Visions.’

Discussing the artistic vision behind the museum, Linkof stressed the importance of celebrating popular arts, noting, “It will be the home for the kinds of art that we live with, including book and magazine illustration, comic book art, children’s book illustration, and film. These forms have profoundly influenced cultural discourse.”
Jim Lee concurred, emphasizing that the museum will elevate commercial art, aligning it with the standards of fine art institutions. “It’s a very smart approach to celebrate what is considered entertainment and elevate it to a higher level of appreciation,” Lee remarked.

Green added a personal touch, reflecting on how mainstream acceptance of previously marginalized art forms is a remarkable achievement. “We’ve lived long enough to see all the stuff that we were beaten for loving become the fine art of our day. It’s extraordinary.”
Lee concluded the panel with a passionate reminder of art’s role in shaping perspectives, inviting attendees to engage with the museum’s offerings, which promise to enlighten and inspire by presenting familiar art in transformative ways.
