Director Joseph Kosinski is gearing up for a long-anticipated revival of the iconic Miami Vice film. Universal Pictures has officially slated the project for release on August 6, 2027. Casting is currently in progress, with production set to commence next year.

Kosinski, who achieved significant acclaim with Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie, aims to delve into the allure and corruption of 1980s Miami. This reimagining of Miami Vice draws inspiration from the pilot episode and early seasons of the groundbreaking television series that not only influenced pop culture but also set new standards in fashion and filmmaking.

The new film will be produced for IMAX, continuing Kosinski’s trend of enhancing visual storytelling, as demonstrated in his previous works.

Miami Vice initially captivated audiences as a groundbreaking series created by Anthony Yerkovich, featuring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as undercover Miami police officers. Known for their penchant for pastel suits, the series broke new ground in television history during its run from 1984 to 1990. The iconic IP was already revived in 2006 with a feature film directed by Michael Mann, which grossed over $163 million globally.

The upcoming project will be produced by Dylan Clark, known for his work on The Batman, alongside Kosinski, with a screenplay crafted by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, building on characters developed by Yerkovich. Kosinski has been developing this project for some time, ensuring a polished vision.

In addition to Miami Vice, Kosinski is reportedly attached to direct an upcoming UFO conspiracy thriller for Apple that generated significant buzz during a recent bidding war. There are also discussions about a potential sequel to Top Gun: Maverick, which solidified his status as one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood.

The overwhelming success of Top Gun: Maverick, which amassed $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, underscores the excitement surrounding Kosinski’s current and future projects. Universal’s plans for Miami Vice promise to rekindle the essence of the original series while attracting a whole new generation of fans.
