The creative team behind *Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc*, including director Masato Nakazono, supervising producer Manabu Otsuka of MAPPA, and CGI producer Yusuke Tannawa, recently shared insights at New York Comic Con. They discussed the intricacies of adapting one of *Chainsaw Man*’s most beloved arcs for the big screen.
Director Nakazono emphasized the importance of retaining the series’ strengths in this adaptation. “We aimed to inherit the essence of the original manga and animated series while presenting it in a theatrical format,” he stated.
To achieve this, the creative team undertook several visual adjustments, such as enhancing the vibrancy of character designs. Nakazono noted, “For example, Makima’s hair color has been made more vibrant to stand out in the film. We made every effort to ensure the background and character designs complemented the theatrical frame, creating a cohesive visual experience.”
Adapting *Chainsaw Man* for film also meant expanding the original dialogue from the manga. “The manga lacks spoken dialogue between panels, so we had to fill in those gaps while ensuring that the dialogue resonates with audiences,” Nakazono explained. The personal relationship between characters Reze and Denji was a focal point, with the goal of ensuring viewers could empathize with Denji’s feelings.
The film employs a blend of 2D and 3D animation styles, allowing both to coexist naturally. Tannawa conveyed the importance of this synergy for the overall visual storytelling. “We aimed for a seamless integration to enhance the cinematic experience, mindful of the differences in scale between TV shows and films,” he added.
When asked about the decision to collaborate with Sony for the film’s international distribution, Otsuka remarked, “Given the success of the first season, we wanted to explore a film as a sequel rather than a continuation on television. We felt that teaming up with Sony would help us effectively bring this film to a broader audience.”
During the panel, they shared exclusive clips and commentary, highlighting their enthusiasm and commitment to delivering an exhilarating cinematic experience. Character designer Kazutaka expressed, “Our goal was to capture the fun and appeal of *Chainsaw Man* for as many people as possible. The action sequences are designed to resonate like an amusement park ride, encouraging audiences to just sit back and enjoy.”
For Yoshihara, the *Reze Arc* represents a diverse blend of themes, including love, violence, and action, asserting that the film’s impact varies depending on the character’s perspective. “With every screening of *Reze Arc*, we pour our passion into the project, hoping to bring vitality to every frame,” he stated, reflecting on the intense labor the team has devoted to this film.
*Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc* is set to release in theaters on October 24.
