Renowned filmmaker David S. Goyer has officially confirmed the key scene that marked the inception of The Dark Knight Rises. This pivotal moment sets the tone for the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy.
According to That Hashtag Show, the dramatic closing scene of The Dark Knight Rises was the first concept discussed by Goyer and Nolan. “The first idea we came up with was that last scene,” Goyer recounted. “That was the first idea and then we knew we had a movie that he got out because then we said, ‘Okay, so the deal is Alfred’s his proxy father. He’s worried that Bruce sees no way out of this other than suicide by Batman. Death by Batman.’ Right?”
He elaborated, “That’s what he’s focused on, and he’s never going to get out, and he’s worried that that’s where his sort of adopted son is going to go and he thinks that that’s where his adopted son went. And then at this moment, he sees this nod and he realizes Bruce got out, and we thought, ‘Oh, that’s a story worth telling.’ We had no idea what the rest of the movie was, but we had the end.” Goyer further expressed skepticism about the possibility of another sequel in Nolan’s Dark Knight series, yet indicated he would “absolutely consider” taking on the role if it were offered.

Directed by Christopher Nolan and co-written with Jonathan Nolan, based on a story from Goyer, The Dark Knight Rises premiered in 2012, receiving widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike. As a follow-up to 2008’s The Dark Knight, the film reintroduced audiences to Christian Bale’s portrayal of Batman, alongside Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, and Gary Oldman as James Gordon. Notably, the film also featured Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (Catwoman), Tom Hardy as Bane, and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate (Talia al Ghul). Ultimately, The Dark Knight Rises grossed over $1.082 billion worldwide during its theatrical release, solidifying its status as a box office success.
Currently, The Dark Knight Rises is available for streaming on HBO Max.
For the past few years, Goyer, alongside co-creator Josh Friedman, has been leading the successful sci-fi series Foundation for Apple TV+. Based on Isaac Asimov’s acclaimed series of works, Foundation explores the dynamics of a genetic dynasty ruled by three clones of an Emperor at varying stages of their life. Recently renewed for a fourth season, co-showrunners Ian Goldberg and David Kob expressed their enthusiasm: “There is no series quite like Foundation, and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into Season 4. We look forward to continuing the epic, emotional storytelling that defined the first three seasons of the show, while collaborating with some of the most talented and passionate creative partners in the industry.”
