In a notable development for fans and collectors of Disney memorabilia, the anticipated live-action remake of the beloved animated classic ‘Robin Hood’ has been officially shelved. During a recent Reddit AMA, filmmaker Carlos López Estrada confirmed that the studio will not proceed with the photorealistic musical he had been developing for Disney+.

This news comes as a disappointment to many who were looking forward to a fresh interpretation of the story of the heroic outlaw, particularly those who cherish the 1973 animated feature, which achieved great success at the box office. Estrada expressed his sorrow over the decision, stating, “It’s dead, sadly. I say ‘sadly’ because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.” The director hinted at a desire to reimagine the project independently, perhaps with alternate characters.
Initially, the film was reported to be in the early stages of development back in April 2020, with Kari Granlund penning the script to create a hybrid of live action and CGI. Granlund’s previous work includes the 2019 release of ‘Lady and the Tramp,’ which was Disney’s first remake to debut on a streaming platform. The winding journey of this project illustrates the difficulties in the current landscape of film production, which has been further complicated by recent box office performances.
Disney’s renewed focus on theatrical releases—as highlighted by CEO Bob Iger—has allowed projects like the live-action remake of ‘Lilo & Stitch’ and the upcoming theatrical adaptation of ‘Moana’ to gain momentum, while several others remain in limbo. This strategic shift could influence how new collectible lines emerge, as retail opportunities may arise from potential new live-action adaptations in the future.
Fans of Disney’s animated classics often seek varied collectibles reflecting their cherished characters. The legacy of ‘Robin Hood,’ with its unique anthropomorphic interpretations, has historically drawn collectors towards action figures, plush toys, and other memorabilia. Although this specific remake is not being pursued, established demand for related merchandise continues, sustaining interest among retailers and collectors alike.
Estrada also touched on his experience co-directing the animated feature ‘Raya and the Last Dragon,’ sharing insights into the challenges and triumphs he faced within the studio, where he became Disney Animation’s first director of color. “Needless to say, I lasted only a few years there. But they were really great years. I wouldn’t trade them for the world.”
