Henry Cavill‘s Highlander, previously slated to commence principal photography this month, has now been postponed to 2026 following an injury sustained by the actor during pre-production, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
The specifics of Cavill’s injury remain unspecified; however, the production was close to finalizing its extensive cast as it geared up for filming in the coming weeks. Plans now indicate that filming is expected to begin in early next year.
Chad Stahelski, renowned for his work in the action genre, is directing this long-anticipated project that he has been nurturing for nearly a decade. The film transitioned from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM Studios during its development.
The remake of the original 1980s classic focuses on immortal warriors and will feature prominent actors including Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, and Max Zhang.
Cavill, who has been intensively preparing for the role, recently stated during CinemaCon 2024 that, “If you think you’ve seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.” This film signifies a significant milestone for Cavill as he seeks to launch a franchise that could parallel his iconic portrayal as Superman in the DC movies.
The original film starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, paving the way for sequels and a television series. The updated script is penned by John Wick: Chapter 4 writer Michael Finch and produced by notable names such as Scott Stuber and Neal H. Moritz, alongside Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment, among others.
At present, the industry eagerly awaits further updates on the production timeline and the potential direction of the narrative.
