Batman is set to unveil a striking new look in the upcoming Batman #1, crafted by the creative duo of Matt Fraction and Jorge Jimenez. This raises the question: how will this transformation be reflected in other Batman comics? Detective Comics artist Mikel Janín has provided clarity through a recent announcement regarding Detective Comics #1101, slated for release in September 2025. “Yes! We have the new suit starting on #1101,” he confirmed.

“Jorge and I have a very superhero-forward kind of take on Batman. We’ve got a new Batmobile, we’ve got a new costume, we’ve got new characters, and we’ve got a lot of old ones too — good and bad; all the stuff that makes Batman the coolest character in comics. We want to celebrate it all,” Fraction stated.

Fraction elaborated, “Between the end of Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez’s run and where things are in ‘H2SH,’ it felt like a good moment for a new day in Gotham. We got a new costume, and we got new characters. This is the book that brought me into comics. I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t for Batman. It was the first comic I ever read, since I was three, and I have a lot of ideas and cool stories to tell. And it’s a new #1! There have only been three or four of those! Part of the reason Batman has endured as long and resonated so deeply is due to his incredible resilience. He can resonate with a wide array of audiences simultaneously, whether in comics, animation, or movies. To me, this new series is Batman central. It’s very superhero-forward with a good mix of detective work and super-villains, celebrating everything that makes Batman so compelling. Each issue is self-contained with a full narrative arc, building on the overarching storyline. I aim to write for the three-year-old me who first discovered Batman and got captivated by his world.
As the series progresses, the tone may vary issue by issue. One of the characters I am most excited to write aside from Batman is Bruce Wayne. Batman and Bruce Wayne will share the spotlight equally; much of the narrative will focus on Bruce and his journey. I have a wealth of characters I want to explore; the challenge lies in how soon I can introduce them. The organized crime landscape in Gotham has significantly evolved; the antagonists have found a way to manipulate the system, creating the illusion of a crime-free paradise. With Vandal Savage corrupting the GCPD, the police’s loyalty is compromised. The villains have become legitimized, operating with impunity in broad daylight, making the landscape even more treacherous for all involved. Expect plenty of conflict as multiple factions vie for dominance throughout the series.”
