The Marvel Cinematic Universe is poised for a return of its Scarlet Witch, albeit in a form that delves into the realms of horror. The latest iteration of this character is set to present a nightmarish twist as she steps into a profoundly unsettling version of her former self.

In a recent Twitter announcement from the fan account Cosmic Marvel, Marvel Animation revealed a striking new character poster for the forthcoming Marvel Zombies streaming series. The poster showcases a zombified Scarlet Witch ominously hovering over a cadre of superhuman ghouls, set against a backdrop of a blood-red sky, her penetrating gaze directed towards the audience.
The Marvel Zombies mythos has left an indelible mark on fans since its inception in 2005 with the comic Ultimate Fantastic Four #21 authored by Mark Millar and illustrated by Greg Land. This series introduced a macabre version of The Fantastic Four, who crossed into the original Ultimate Universe of Earth-1610 under the misguided belief of encountering an altruistic counterpart of Reed Richards. Instead, they unleashed a calamity that spread horror across multiple realities within the Multiverse, leading to numerous reinterpretations.
The MCU’s take on the Marvel Zombies debuted in the inaugural season of Marvel Studios’ animated series, What If…, specifically in the episode titled “What If… Zombies!” In this narrative, the Marvel Zombies ascend from their universe’s Quantum Realm, where a stranded Janet van Dyne inadvertently becomes the first victim in a gruesome epidemic. The upcoming Marvel Zombies animated series will feature a diverse group of superhuman survivors—including Red Guardian, Shang-Chi, Ant-Man, the U.S. Agent, Kate Bishop, Valkyrie, Riri Williams, and Kamala Khan—each portrayed by their respective MCU voice actors. Additionally, the series will introduce a new incarnation of Eric Brooks, a.k.a. Blade, voiced by Todd Williams, who ultimately assumes the mantle of Khonshu’s Fist and becomes known as Moon Knight.
Director Bryan Andrews has assured fans that while Marvel Zombies promises ample brutal and bloody action, it will be mindful to avoid a gratuitous portrayal of violence. Harnessing a character-driven narrative, Andrews elaborated, “I think the rating comes from the level of violence and or intensity of the moments that the characters find themselves in. Blood gets spilled, and we want to be able to see that.” He emphasized that their approach to violence isn’t merely focused on excessive gore, but rather on driving the story forward.
Mark your calendars: Marvel Zombies is set to premiere on Disney+ on September 24, 2025.
