Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Secure Crew Bonuses for Netflix’s The Rip, Signaling a Shift in Film Financing

Date:

In a significant move for the entertainment industry, renowned filmmakers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have successfully negotiated bonus incentives for the crew of their upcoming Netflix project, The Rip. This initiative, aimed at enhancing fair compensation practices, highlights a potential shift in how film productions may engage with their talent and crew moving forward.

Ben Affleck, Matt Damon Convince Netflix to Give The Rip Crew Bonuses

For The Rip, a film featuring a storyline about Miami police officers discovering hidden money, Affleck and Damon, through their production company, Artists Equity, advocated for a deal that diverges from Netflix’s usual compensation model. Traditionally, Netflix offers a set upfront payment to cast and crew, whereas this new approach promises a one-time bonus to all 1,200 participants tied to the film’s performance on the platform.

As film industry veterans, Affleck expressed the reasoning behind this decision, stating, “We wanted to institute fairness and address some of the real issues that are present and urgent for our business.” This sentiment captures a growing frustration within the industry regarding compensation, especially as production costs reach near $100 million.

Under this new agreement, bonuses will be available based on metrics defined for the film’s first 90 days of availability on Netflix, raising the stakes for the entire crew. Affleck emphasized that fair compensation is a principle at the core of their newly formed company, Artists Equity, which champions profit-sharing among contributors.

Moreover, it’s noteworthy that Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has been supportive of this more equitable approach, showcasing an openness within the company to adapt their traditional financial structures in response to the evolving conversations about fairness in employer-employee relationships.

In an intriguing layer to Artists Equity’s financing, the company, backed by Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital Partners, demonstrates a model that couples artistic collaboration with business acumen. RedBird’s involvement also aligns it with Paramount Pictures in a bigger battle over Warner Bros. Discovery, though this competition remains separate from the partnership established by Affleck and Damon.

The ramifications of this deal are significant not only for those directly involved in The Rip but for the industry at large as it moves towards more inclusive and fair compensation models, which could reshape the landscape of film production and crew dynamics.
