Mortal Kombat II screenwriter Jeremy Slater announced during the New York Comic Con panel that New Line and Warner Bros. have officially greenlit a third installment in the celebrated franchise. He encouraged attendees to support the film in theaters next summer to demonstrate continued demand for the series.

Joining Slater on stage was director Simon McQuoid and returning cast members Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford. The team discussed the anticipated delays for the sequel and shared what fans can look forward to in this next chapter. McQuoid explained that the film’s release had been pushed from October to May 16, 2026, due to “being a victim of our own success,” reflecting on the overwhelming positive responses to Mortal Kombat II.

“Every time people have seen this movie, it’s gained momentum,” McQuoid noted, highlighting the film’s status as a blockbuster. He expressed pride in the franchise’s upcoming continuation and the importance of fan anticipation for a significant release.

The panel featured a behind-the-scenes look, with cast members hinting at the “fatalities” and “flawless victories” that fans can expect, alluding to a larger scale and a storyline that promises to expand on the established lore of the franchise.

Slater emphasized that the sequel aims to provide a richer experience by delving deeper into character emotions while doubling the action scenes from the previous film, stating, “The tournament itself allowed us to create a structure that the storylines all went through.” He further added that the film is designed to maintain momentum without allowing for “downtime,” ensuring audiences remain engaged throughout.

McQuoid also shared that Mortal Kombat III will be presented in IMAX for a unique viewing experience that capitalizes on the format’s capabilities. He promised additional elements specific to IMAX that would enhance the storytelling.

Regarding character arcs, Urban shared insights into Johnny Cage’s journey, detailing a character who begins in a state of despair and is then reinvigorated throughout the film. “You’re going to see him transform into a true champion of Earth Realm,” Urban explained, highlighting the growth and challenges that Cage will face.

As the excitement builds for Mortal Kombat III, both the director and cast remain dedicated to meeting fan expectations while expanding the franchise’s universe.
