Hollywood is mourning the loss of Diane Keaton.
The Oscar-winning actress, renowned for her roles in Annie Hall, the Godfather trilogy, Father of the Bride, Something’s Gotta Give, and The First Wives Club, passed away on Saturday in California at the age of 79. Details regarding the cause of her death have not yet been disclosed.
In the wake of this news, numerous industry professionals and co-stars took to social media to express their condolences and remember her legacy.
Robert De Niro released a statement, stating: “I am deeply saddened to learn of Diane’s passing. I cherished our friendship, and the news of her departure comes as a complete surprise to me. She will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace.”
Bette Midler, who shared the screen with Keaton and Goldie Hawn in 1996’s The First Wives Club, took to Instagram to say, “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has departed. I cannot articulate how profoundly sad this makes me. She was so funny, a true original, and completely devoid of guile or the competitiveness one would expect from such a luminary. What you saw was precisely who she was…oh, la, lala!”
Additionally, actress Kate Hudson shared a tribute featuring a clip of the trio in the movie, captioning it, “We love you so much Diane.”
Steve Martin, who starred alongside her in 1991’s Father of the Bride, posted a portion of a 2021 interview where Martin Short humorously asked Keaton, “Who’s sexier, me or Steve Martin?” to which she retorted, “I mean, you’re both idiots.” Martin affectionately remarked, “This clip encapsulates our delightful friendship with Diane.”
From the set of Book Club, co-star Candice Bergen remarked to THR, “This is a monumental loss both for me personally and for all of us. Diane was a true artist—immensely talented across various disciplines, yet also modest and wonderfully eccentric. I will miss her dearly.” Mary Steenburgen expressed her admiration, stating, “Diane was magical. There will never be anyone like her. I loved her profoundly and felt blessed to be her friend. Sending my love to her family; she was a wonder!”
Leonardo DiCaprio, who portrayed Keaton’s nephew in Marvin’s Room, shared an Instagram tribute: “Diane Keaton was one of a kind. Brilliant, funny, unapologetically herself. A legend and a genuinely kind individual. I had the privilege of working with her at 18. She will be missed deeply.”
