The highly anticipated Season 2 premiere of Peacemaker introduced several unexpected twists, notably a pivotal scene involving the Justice Gang that effectively alters elements of the DCEU. Director James Gunn cautioned fans that the most shocking content is yet to be revealed, which is why he has opted to withhold the final three episodes from early reviewers.

James Gunn elaborated on his decision to limit screeners for the initial episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 to select audience members. He stated, “I am the one who’s keeping the three episodes away from everybody because there’s too many surprises in those last three episodes,” as reported by DC Film News on X. Refreshingly, episodes 6 and 8 have left him particularly ecstatic, marking some of his favorite creative contributions across his entire portfolio.
The Season 2 premiere of Peacemaker has already provided an insight into Gunn’s overarching vision for the DCEU. A bold retcon has replaced the Justice League with the Justice Gang, redefining moments from the Season 1 finale. Furthermore, Gunn acknowledges the inconsistencies from the first season that he hopes to address, comparing his approach to George Lucas’s revisions of Star Wars canon. “At some point, I’d love to Lucas the s*** out of it, but right now I don’t have the money,” he shared with TV Insider.
On the topic of adjustments, Gunn hinted at his intentions while discussing season inconsistencies, saying, “Unfortunately I’d have to change too many little things throughout Season 1, and it would cost too much money. And I’d rather just give that money to a few more CGI shots of superheroes. But I think that we deal with it. We say, canon is really Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker Season 2. I’d love for people to watch Season 1. Obviously, we’re changing [the Justice League scene], but we’re not gonna go back and reshoot all of it for Season 1, at least not at this point.” This reveals a potential future reworking of Season 1’s narrative, contingent upon available resources and logistical feasibility.
The potential for a more comprehensive canon, which includes numerous threads from The Suicide Squad and character connections involving Amanda Waller, remains open. With the introduction of pocket universes, the possibilities seem limitless. Gunn has made it clear that he prefers to let audience speculation thrive rather than risk spoiler leaks. He remarked, “That is one option. Or it could mean that there’s a lot of major twists and turns in the last three episodes. And even though I’m sending the first five to a select few, things still get out as you know. Things got out already. You know, people who want to search can be spoiled on purpose, but I really don’t want what’s in those last three episodes to be spoiled. I won’t even let my publicist see them. That’s the god’s honest truth.”
New episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 are released weekly on Thursdays via HBO Max.
