Illumination and Nintendo have officially titled the animated sequel to the highly successful Super Mario Bros. 2 as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The voice cast for this eagerly anticipated installment will feature returning talents including Mario (Chris Pratt), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day), Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson). Additional voice actors are expected to be announced at a later date.
Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who also steered the first Super Mario Bros. Movie, will continue their storytelling in this new adventure. The film is set to be released by Universal Pictures on April 3, 2026, across U.S. and international markets, with a subsequent release in Japan on April 24, 2026.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follows the success of the first installment, which grossed over $1.3 billion globally. The original movie traced the origins of Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) as they transitioned from plumbers in Brooklyn to heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom via a mysterious pipe, featuring performances by Keegan Michael-Key, Jack Black, Sebastian Maniscalco, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Both the 2023 film and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo. The co-directors, Horvath and Jelenic, along with their team of animators, are already engaged in storyboarding and designing new environments for this cinematic venture.
This film is co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, with a screenplay by returning writer Matthew Fogel, and the return of composer Brian Tyler to deliver the film’s score.
