Superman and Peacemaker star Frank Grillo has revealed that he will play an even more significant role in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow sequel, a development that could have ripple effects on fan interest and merchandise opportunities.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Grillo outlined the trajectory of his career, which includes a leading role in the Sylvester Stallone-led Tulsa King prior to reprising his role as Rick Flag Sr. in Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. “My character, Rick Flag Sr., is a big part of the sequel’s story, so I’m excited about it,” Grillo detailed.
Grillo first introduced audiences to Rick Flag Sr. in the successful animated series Creature Commandos, which debuted on HBO in 2024. His role as the former soldier turned leader of a superpowered team poses potential merchandising opportunities for collectors focused on unique character representations, especially given Flag Sr.’s complex background as the father of the character played by Joel Kinnaman in the *Suicide Squad* films.
Rick Flag Sr. has appeared prominently in both Superman and the second season of Peacemaker. He has adopted a more central role in the latter series, where he became the acting director of A.R.G.U.S., using his influence to seek revenge against Peacemaker after the death of his son. This character development suggests deeper storytelling and character arcs that may resonate with a broad audience, influencing collector strategies around related merchandise.
Several key players have been confirmed for Man of Tomorrow, including David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Collectors should note the potential for new collectibles featuring both returning and novel character designs. Furthermore, the spinoff series focusing on the journalists of the Daily Planet, led by Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen, suggests more diverse product lines that will cater to varying collector interests.
Currently, fans can stream Superman on HBO Max, making it a good time for collectors to engage with the material ahead of future releases.
