Located in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park, the Lucas Museum is scheduled to open its doors in September 2026. It will feature an extensive array of works from revered figures in art and illustration, including notables like Posy Simmonds, N. C. Wyeth, Beatrix Potter, Norman Rockwell, Kadir Nelson, Alison Bechdel, Robert Crumb, and many others. This ambitious project, founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, is poised to become the largest comic book gallery in the world, spanning 100,000 square feet and encompassing 35 galleries containing a permanent collection of over 40,000 artistic works.

The museum’s vast collection includes significant pieces such as Frazetta’s iconic cover for A Princess of Mars, Rockwell’s celebrated cover for The Saturday Evening Post, and unpublished illustrations by Beatrix Potter. Also featured will be celebrated works by anime and manga legend Osamu Tezuka and production art from Ralph McQuarrie tied to the Star Wars franchise.

The architectural vision behind the museum is led by Ma Yansong of MAD, in collaboration with Stantec, situated beautifully on an 11-acre campus that includes lush green spaces designed by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA. The completed structure will encompass a total of 300,000 square feet and will house galleries, two theatres, a retail store, a library, a café, and event spaces.

The ethos of the museum reflects a commitment to narrative art, noting, “Narrative art is created to represent stories through images. Much of the world’s artistic expression has been motivated by storytelling, transmitting narratives rooted in religion, myth, history, literature, or events… The Lucas Museum shows how narrative art influences societies—shaping beliefs, communicating values, inspiring imagination, and creating communities.” This philosophy underscores the relevance of the museum’s offerings for both casual visitors and serious collectors.

The museum’s board of directors and curating staff will be instrumental in ensuring the collection represents a comprehensive view of narrative art across various mediums.
