Paramount is closing in on final details for a sequel to its 2013 blockbuster World War Z, with Brad Pitt set to return to lead the feature.
The project, first announced at CinemaCon in April, has also lined up Edward Berger, the German filmmaker behind All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, to direct. Dennis Kelly, who won a Tony for the book of Matilda the Musical and has created several British thriller series, wrote the script.
The sequel follows Paramount’s 2013 adaptation of Max Brooks’ bestselling horror novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War. Directed by Marc Forster, the film transformed the source material into a globe-spanning disaster thriller centered on a former United Nations worker racing around the world in search of a way to stop a zombie pandemic. The movie became a major critical and commercial success, grossing more than $540 million worldwide.
Pitt and Berger already have a working relationship, having collaborated on The Riders, a psychological thriller that is currently in post-production.
