The forthcoming Super Creepshow Special #1 is set to diverge significantly from its predecessors in the acclaimed series.

Creepshow Comic

As the 2025 Halloween season approaches, enthusiasts of the macabre have an excellent opportunity to revel in some of cinema’s most chilling classics. However, for comic book aficionados who enjoy narratives of a spooky nature, there is a thrilling alternative: the latest iteration of the darkly humorous Creepshow comic book series.

Originating from the 1982 horror anthology film helmed by George A. Romero and penned by Stephen King, this special edition promises not only to enthrall fans of the eerie but also those loyal to the superhero genre.

Super Creepshow Special #1 brings together an impressive array of renowned comic book writers and artists tasked with crafting a trio of sinister tales featuring caped characters. Notably, the artwork pays homage to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, featuring The Creep as a stand-in for Batman. Readers can anticipate narratives inspired by iconic origin stories and legendary comic arcs, albeit with devilish twists.

The first story, penned by writer Dan Watters (of Batman: Dark Patterns and Destro fame) and illustrated by Absolute Superman‘s Carmine Di Giandomenico, revolves around a recently deceased yet powerful crimefighter whose burial leads to an unexpected resurrection that alters his identity. This narrative evokes the groundbreaking themes found in The Death of Superman, paralleling the tale by Ed Brisson and Andrei Bressan, which introduces a serum mistakenly administered to the wrong individual, resembling an alternate universe where Captain America’s morality is called into question.

The second story evokes the origins of DC’s Deadman. Crafted by writer Ryan Stegman (known for X-Men) and illustrated by Riley Rossmo (co-creator of The Moon is Following Us), it follows the Grave Ghost, a superhero determined to solve the mystery of his own murder.

The Creepshow comic series, published by Image Comics since 2023, draws direct inspiration from the original Shudder anthology series which honors the frightening comics of the 1950s, such as Vault of Horror and Tales from the Crypt. This lineage illustrates a fascinating narrative cycle: a comic book adaptation born from a television series that itself is a spinoff of a film, all influenced by the very comic books that inspired it.

Recently, Image Comics released the first issue of Creepshow Vol. 4 in September 2025. This chilling release showcased a double feature of twisted tales by prominent creators, including Jeremy Adams (author of Green Lantern: Fracture Spectrum) and Eduardo Risso, who together weave a love story with a satirical
