Media Do Acquires Major Manga Publisher Seven Seas Entertainment, Impacting Industry Dynamics

Recent developments in the manga publishing landscape highlight significant shifts that could influence collectors, retailers, and industry observers alike. Japanese eBook distributor Media Do has announced the acquisition of Seven Seas Entertainment, the largest independently owned manga publisher serving the English-language market.

Manga Publisher Seven Seas Entertainment Bought By Media Do

The deal, facilitated by Media Do International — based in San Diego, California — signifies a strategic expansion for the Japanese company’s global reach. Since its founding in 2004 by Jason DeAngelis, Seven Seas has built a noteworthy catalog, with over 1,300 series and thousands of titles from Japan, China, South Korea, and beyond, including popular titles such as Monster Musume, Lost in the Cloud, and Dear. Door. This acquisition maintains Seven Seas’ operational independence, with ongoing management and editorial direction, ensuring continuity for its authors and fans.

Media Do, Tokyo-based and known for its leadership in eBook distribution and AI-driven translation services, has previously expanded through acquisitions of Quality Solutions/Firebrand Technologies, NetGalley in 2021, and Supadü in 2022. The firm’s strategic investments exemplify a broader commitment to expanding digital and print manga in global markets.

The PR emphasizes that “Seven Seas will continue to operate under its existing leadership team and editorial direction. There are no changes to distribution, publishing schedules, or core operations as a result of this transaction. All Seven Seas print imprints will continue to be distributed worldwide by Penguin Random House Publisher Services.”

In comments reflecting on the significance of this deal, Jason DeAngelis stated, “Our focus has always been on publishing exceptional stories with care and passion. This partnership strengthens our position while preserving the creative independence that defines Seven Seas. We remain dedicated to our creators, partners, and readers.”

Daihei Shiohama, President and CEO of Media Do International, added, “Seven Seas has established a highly respected publishing program with a strong industry presence. We look forward to supporting their continued growth and providing resources that enable the team to champion great stories worldwide.”

Importantly, Seven Seas has also been recognized for progressive labor practices within the industry, notably becoming the second major U.S. manga publisher to publicly accept union representation for its employees, and the first to do so willingly. This move underscores its commitment to fostering a fair and sustainable working environment within a competitive market sector.
