Charlie Day and Jennifer Aniston, whose characters frequently clashed in the Horrible Bosses franchise, appear to be united in their mutual interest for a third installment in this beloved R-rated comedy series.
Following Aniston’s recent comments expressing her desire to revisit the franchise, Day confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he would be “absolutely up for another” Horrible Bosses film.
At a recent screening of his current film, Honey Don’t!, Day mentioned, “I had some conversations about it with some people involved in front and behind the camera,” implying that the prospect of a third film may be more than just idle chatter.
He added, “We’ll see — hopefully there’s an appetite at the studio for it.” In expressing his support for theatrical comedies, Day referenced a newly released Naked Gun film, stating, “It was so fun to be in a theater with a comedy with a capital ‘C.'” He reiterated, “I’d love to do a third one; hopefully, we get to do it.”
Back in June, Aniston indicated that Horrible Bosses is the project she is most interested in revisiting. She stated, “Jason Bateman and I were talking about that, and Charlie Day has been talking about it a lot too. So that’s something that we think would be super fun.” She further emphasized the necessity of comedy, noting, “The characters are hilarious, and we need comedy. I personally think comedy is a necessity. That’s one that we would have a really fun time, I think, going back to, seeing where those crazy cats are today.”
Aniston fondly reflected on her experience in the franchise during a recent video interview for Vanity Fair’s “Rewatch” series, recalling her efforts to ensure her character had a distinctive look. “I wanted [my character] to look different,” she shared, emphasizing the contrast to her typical portrayals.
The first installment of Horrible Bosses, which hit theaters in 2011, was helmed by Seth Gordon and featured a robust ensemble, including Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, and Jamie Foxx. The plot revolves around three friends who conspire to eliminate their undesirable bosses, earning nearly $210 million on a $35 million budget.
The sequel, released in 2014 and directed by Sean Anders, saw the return of most of the original cast along with new additions Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz. Unfortunately, it did not achieve the same box office success, grossing approximately $108 million against a $42 million budget.
Reflecting on the sequel, Bateman previously commented on Marc Maron’s podcast, expressing doubts about the necessity of the follow-up, despite his affection for both films. He mentioned, “A lot of people saw the first one, but there are plenty of films that made a lot of money where no one is interested in seeing another one.”
This ongoing speculation about a third film could mean exciting developments for fans of the franchise. Stay tuned for further updates.
