Severance breakout Zach Cherry, True Detective co-star Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson from I Love That for You have been cast in Sony Pictures and Zach Cregger’s reboot of the iconic horror franchise, Resident Evil.

Austin Abrams, who garnered attention for his portrayal of an unhoused drug addict in Cregger’s successful film Weapons, leads the ensemble cast. This film is taking a different direction compared to previous adaptations, aiming to pay homage to the original Capcom video games while featuring entirely new characters.

Cregger not only directs the reboot but also co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten, known for his work on John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4.

While specific plot details remain closely guarded, buzz suggests themes of a hapless courier, a mysterious package, mutated creatures, and corporate conspiracy are central to the narrative.

Cherry is reportedly portraying a scientist at a hospital, while Reis’s character is an ex-military type originally penned for a male actor. Wilson’s function in the story is yet to be disclosed.

Production is set to commence in mid-October in Prague, with a theatrical release date slated for September 18, 2026.

Constantin Film is at the helm of production, co-financing the project alongside several notable partners. Producing are Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon from Vertigo Entertainment, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions, the latter of which has previously worked on The Last of Us and Uncharted.

In an executive capacity, Constantin’s Oliver Berben and Victor Hadida from Davis Films will oversee the project, with TriStar Pictures’ president Nicole Brown managing the film for Sony Pictures.

Cherry, celebrated for his Emmy-nominated role as Dylan George in Apple TV+’s acclaimed Severance, has made appearances in Amazon’s Fallout and the Marvel blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He is also affixed with TriStar through his role in the impending Nate Bargatze comedy The Breadwinner.

Former professional boxing champion turned actress Reis captivated audiences during her performance opposite Jodie Foster in season four of HBO’s True Detective, which led to her receiving nominations for an Emmy, Critics Choice Award, and Golden Globe. Her upcoming projects include roles alongside Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson in Amazon/MGM’s Mercy, as well as her role in Apple TV+’s 12 12 12.

Wilson, noted for his comedic flair and a proven track record with the Groundling Theatre, has featured prominently in season two of Peacock’s Twisted Metal and as a series regular in Showtime’s I Love This For You.

Cherry is represented by CAA, Edna Cowan Management, and Felker Toczek, whereas Reis is repped by CAA, Authentic Talent, and Jackoway Austen. Wilson’s representation comes from 3 Arts Entertainment and Lichter Grossman.
