In a deeply personal essay published in The Free Press, renowned filmmaker Woody Allen pays tribute to his former muse and lifelong friend, Diane Keaton, who sadly passed away at the age of 79.

Allen describes Keaton as “most unique,” stating, “All rules of grammar, and I guess anything else, are suspended when talking about Diane Keaton. Unlike anyone the planet has experienced or is unlikely to ever see again, her face and laugh illuminated any space she entered.”

Their story began during rehearsals for his 1969 play Play It Again, Sam. With both parties shy, a breakthrough moment came when they shared a lunch during a break: “That was our first moment of personal contact. The upshot is that she was so charming, so beautiful, so magical, that I questioned my sanity. I thought: Could I be in love so quickly?”

As their relationship flourished, Keaton became the first person Allen would showcase his films to, asserting that her opinion was the only one that truly mattered. “I never read a single review of my work and cared only what Keaton had to say about it. If she liked it, I counted the film as an artistic success,” he reflects.

Throughout their time together, Allen praises Keaton not only for her exceptional acting but also for her diverse talents in writing, photography, and directing. He fondly recalls a Thanksgiving spent at her family’s home, where he playfully engaged in penny poker.

Keaton was integral to Allen’s artistic journey, starring in several of his celebrated films, including her Oscar-winning performance in Annie Hall. Their collaboration extended across eight films, showcasing their synergy and mutual admiration.

In 2017, during a ceremony where he presented her with the AFI Life Achievement Award, Allen remarked, “Much of what I’ve accomplished in my life I owe, for sure, to her. Seeing life through her eyes. She really is astonishing. This is a woman who is great at everything she does.”

Despite their romantic developments concluding over time, their friendship remained steadfast, with Keaton openly defending Allen during his public controversies, including allegations from his former partner, Mia Farrow. She stated, “Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him.”

Reflecting on Keaton’s passing, Allen poignantly notes, “A few days ago, the world was a place that included Diane Keaton. Now it’s a world that does not. Hence, it’s a drearier world. Still, there are her movies. And her great laugh still echoes in my head.”
