The first weekend of October belonged to Verity, as the psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson opened at No. 1 with an estimated $32.6 million at the domestic box office.
Verity easily outpaced the competition, while Resident Evil held onto second place with $12.5 million and Heart of the Beast finished third with $11 million. The overall domestic box office generated approximately $99 million for the weekend.
The bigger story, however, may be Digger. The new Warner Bros. film starring Tom Cruise debuted in fifth place with just $8 million domestically. The expensive production reportedly carries a budget in the $125–$150 million range, making its opening particularly troubling. Internationally, the film added approximately $12 million.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame: Encore experienced a steep second-weekend decline. After topping the box office last weekend, the rerelease dropped to seventh place with $4.4 million, an approximately 83% decline.

The weekend gives Verity a promising start, but all eyes may now turn toward Digger to see whether international audiences and the film’s second weekend can prevent Tom Cruise’s latest project from becoming one of the year’s biggest box-office disappointments.
