Sony’s Resident Evil reboot dominated the weekend box office, making a remarkable $60 million during its domestic debut. This opening marks a new franchise record, surpassing the previous high held by Resident Evil: Afterlife, which opened with $26.6 million back in 2010.
Director Zach Cregger’s film achieved this milestone in just three days, matching the entire domestic total of Afterlife within the same timeframe. This opening also stands as the largest of Cregger’s directing career, outpacing his earlier horror film Weapons, which debuted to $43.5 million in 2025.
In other box office news, the biblical drama Daniel and the Fiery Furnace opened at seventh place with $3.14 million. The film delves into the early chapters of the Book of Daniel.
The 40th anniversary theatrical rerelease of the 1986 animated classic The Transformers: The Movie made its presence felt, following closely behind in eighth place. This rerelease runs from September 17-22 and features an exclusive post-credits short titled Optimus Prime: Awakening. This 12-minute CG-animated segment showcases Optimus Prime on a spiritual journey after he joins the Matrix and includes a vocal performance from the late Peter Cullen.
