Thunderbolts Producer Clears the Air on Film’s Shocking Conclusion

Thunderbolts* producer Brian Chapek recently addressed the film’s surprising conclusion, firmly dispelling prevalent theories regarding its implications.

During an interview with The Direct, Chapek explored the thematic layers of the film’s titular group of antiheroes, clarifying the true meaning behind the film’s twist ending. “There have been numerous iterations of this team. The core idea of the Thunderbolts in the comics is that it represents a collective of morally complex characters. Sometimes they are outright villains… Other times they take on the role of antiheroes… They consistently embody complexity in their motivations,” Chapek articulated.

“Our challenge was to determine the most fitting Thunderbolts* film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We concluded that the best approach would be to assemble a diverse group of antiheroes from various corners of the universe, placing them in an unforeseen scenario to further develop their narratives in engaging and unexpected manners,” he continued. “By the film’s conclusion, viewers will witness the emergence of a new group of heroes. However, this team is not the Avengers; rather, they represent an antithesis to that iconic group. The excitement lies in observing how these underdogs unite and, against all odds, rise to the occasion as heroes.”

Directed by Jake Schreier, with a screenplay crafted by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, Thunderbolts* showcases an eclectic ensemble of MCU favorites, including Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Notably, the film introduces Lewis Pullman as Robert “Bob” Reynolds, a.k.a. the Sentry, whose dark counterpart, the Void, emerges as the principal antagonist. In a surprising narrative twist, Thunderbolts* concludes with the titular team’s introduction to the wider world, ironically not as the Thunderbolts but as the New Avengers.

As 2025 comes to a close, the MCU will have concluded its cinematic releases with Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Anticipation builds for 2026, which will see the launch of two of Marvel’s most awaited films: Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. The latter promises to bring Robert Downey Jr. back to the MCU as Doctor Doom, potentially igniting a multiversal saga that impacts nearly every hero and villain introduced to date. When queried about the possible role of the antiheroes from Thunderbolts* in the conflict against the MCU’s Doctor Doom, director Jake Schreier highlighted the Sentry’s significance, stating, “You understand the power level we’re dealing with here and how it could influence future events. I’m not involved with Doomsday, so that insight is beyond my purview.”

Thunderbolts* is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
