Blumhouse and Universal Pictures have unveiled the first trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs, a new installment in the iconic horror franchise directed by the acclaimed Mike Flanagan. The trailer was revealed during a presentation at New York Comic Con 2026 and gives fans a glimpse into this fresh direction for the series, which is set to hit theaters on March 12, 2027.
A Standalone Story
Unlike previous installments that either remade William Friedkin’s groundbreaking 1973 classic or continued the narrative from 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, Flanagan takes a new approach with a standalone story that blends supernatural horror with a dark murder mystery. He cites The Exorcist III as a significant thematic influence on this latest project.
Plot Overview
In The Exorcist: Martyrs, Scarlett Johansson plays Julie Miller, a New York City detective whose reputation was established 13 years prior when she ended the reign of terror by a satanic serial killer known as Father Sunday.
Miller is pulled back into the haunting world she thought she had escaped when a new murderer writes her name in the blood of an altar boy across a church crypt wall. This horrifying discovery ignites an investigation that is destined to uncover a far more sinister conspiracy than a typical murder case would suggest.
Distinguished Cast
Alongside Johansson, the film showcases an impressive cast:
- Chiwetel Ejiofor as Father William, a former prison chaplain who heard Father Sunday’s last confession.
- Laurence Fishburne as Father Nichol, a revered priest.
- Diane Lane as Mary, Julie Miller’s mother.
- John Leguizamo as the menacing Father Sunday, one of the most sinister roles of his career.
