Taylor Swift is poised to continue her reign as the box office queen as she returns to theaters this weekend with a special event film celebrating the release of her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, arriving on Friday. The cinematic album release event, which will also include the world premiere of the music video for her single The Fate of Ophelia, in addition to exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, is projected to overshadow its competitors in the relatively subdued box office window from October 3-5, with estimates ranging from $25 million to $35 million, or potentially even higher. While tracking suggests a strong opening of $35 million, distributor AMC Theatres, which collaborated with Swift on her record-breaking concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, has more conservatively posited a range of $25 million to $30 million.

This significant box office opening is forecasted to far outpace that of its nearest rival, The Smashing Machine, a wrestling drama led by Dwayne Johnson. This comes as no surprise, considering that Johnson’s film—produced by A24—carries a more niche appeal compared to the broad audience that Swift typically attracts. Smashing Machine, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in conjunction with the awards season, is expected to earn approximately $12 million to $14 million in its opening weekend.

Directed by Benny Safdie, Smashing Machine features Johnson alongside his Jungle Cruise co-star, Emily Blunt, who was instrumental in connecting Johnson and Safdie. The film chronicles the true story of Mark Kerr, a former college wrestler grappling with trauma and an addiction to painkillers amid the early years of the UFC.

This weekend also sees the re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which aims to leverage box office success as a promotional vehicle for the upcoming Avatar: Ash and Fire this Christmas. Expecting to perform well in IMAX formats, Way of Water will be available in 90% of domestic IMAX theaters. Rival projections suggest it could earn between $3 million to $4 million, with industry insiders speculating it may approach $5 million.

The exclusive theatrical presentation of Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl is scheduled for just three days, during which Swift’s team managed to maintain secrecy around the project until the last minute. Swift took to social media on September 19 to announce the limited engagement, offering fans a unique opportunity to purchase tickets for $12, aligning with her long-standing affinity for numerology.

"I hereby invite you to a *dazzling* soirée, The Official Release Party of a Showgirl: Oct 3 – Oct 5 only in cinemas,” Swift shared on social media. She further highlighted the exclusive premiere of the music video for The Fate of Ophelia and unprecedented behind-the-scenes insights into the album’s creation.

Like her previous film The Eras Tour, which opened with an astounding $93.2 million and solidified its status as the top-grossing concert film globally, Showgirl benefits from a unique distribution model. Swift and her team financed the $15 million project independently, collaborating with AMC Theatres for release in the United States and Canada, and with Piece of Magic Entertainment in international markets.

This one-hour-and-30-minute film will also make its debut in 18 international markets this weekend, with screenings commencing on October 3, coinciding with the album’s release.

Both Avatar and Smashing Machine will feature Thursday preview screenings.
