The Transformers movie franchise may be getting the band back together.
Paramount has tapped Steven Spielberg to take a significantly expanded role on the next live-action Transformers film. Spielberg will serve as executive producer while overseeing the movie’s creative direction alongside longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Meanwhile, Michael Bay is in talks to return to the director’s chair. Bay launched the live-action franchise with 2007’s Transformers and directed five installments through 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight.
The upcoming film is being written by Jason Fuchs and is reportedly set in the modern day. Plot details, casting and a theatrical release date have not yet been announced.
For Transformers fans — and the collectors who follow the franchise’s massive toy presence — a Spielberg/Bay reunion could signal a deliberate return to the style and scale of the early live-action films.
