Stephen Schwartz Discusses Golden Globe Recognition and New Ventures in the Wicked Universe

Stephen Schwartz On Golden Globe Noms, Plans for New Wicked Project

The recent Golden Globe nominations for Stephen Schwartz signify not only an acknowledgment of talent but also an enticing glimpse into future developments within the Wicked franchise, pivotal for collectors and enthusiasts in the entertainment merchandising landscape. Schwartz received two nominations for his original songs from the film Wicked: For Good, illustrating the ongoing cultural impact of the Wicked brand.

At the U.S. premiere of Wicked: For Good in New York, Schwartz shared his surprise upon learning of the nominations via director Jon M. Chu. He expressed disappointment that Chu himself wasn’t recognized, emphasizing the director’s pivotal role in bringing both films to fruition. Schwartz stated, “Though I have to say, I’m quite disappointed that Jon himself wasn’t nominated, because I feel he’s done such an exceptional job on both this movie and the first movie and was such an inspiring leader that I wish it had been possible for him to be recognized as well.”

Schwartz’s nominations—the first for the songs “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble”—reflect the depth of the content created within the Wicked universe. Five Golden Globe nominations were earned by Wicked, including nods for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, though the film did not achieve recognition in the best motion picture or direction categories, which is noteworthy for its industry standing.

As discussions surrounding an additional Wicked film emerge this awards season, Schwartz confirmed that he and Winnie Holzman are exploring a new project linked to the Wicked saga. Initially introduced to Schwartz before the release of the original musicals, the new project seems poised for development due to the favorable reception of the two films. Schwartz explained, “It is not a ‘Wicked’ sequel, but it is a story which, if it goes ahead, occurs within the world of Oz.” Despite his reservations about the timing for a public announcement, Schwartz remains optimistic about the project’s potential.

Following the close of The Queen of Versailles in January and a revival of The Baker’s Wife Off-Broadway, Schwartz plans to take a brief hiatus. However, he hinted at further ideas brewing for stage adaptations in the upcoming year. With Wicked having remained a top-grossing Broadway production since its debut in 2003, its continued popularity can be attributed, according to Schwartz, to the compelling narrative of friendship central to the storyline. He remarked, “I think this particular story of this intense friendship speaks to a lot of people and makes them feel good to encounter it.”

Schwartz crafted the new songs with the unique vocal qualities of Erivo and Grande in mind, noting that “The Girl in the Bubble” serves as a personal reflection for Grande. Additionally, the song “No Place Like Home” resonates with Erivo’s character’s love for Oz amid adversity, incorporating reflections of contemporary political sentiments. He posed the question, “How can we not be looking at what’s going on in our country, what’s going on in the world around us, and be thinking in terms of our personal relationship to and responsibility to our own society and the country and world we live in?”

While Schwartz joyfully competes against himself in his nominations, he also acknowledges the notable competition posed by other nominees, including a song with contributions from his friend Mark Sonnenblick. He remarked on Sonnenblick’s work, saying, “I think, brought a certain musical theater sensibility and storytelling to the writing that has elevated the song. So I was really pleased to see him recognized as well.”
