The iconic science fiction and fantasy publication Starlog is officially returning to print after a 17-year hiatus. This revival celebrates its 50th anniversary with a new annual issue scheduled to ship on November 13.
Originally launched in 1976 by Norman Jacobs and Kerry O’Quinn, Starlog became a seminal voice in science fiction and fantasy fandom. Often regarded as the “sci-fi bible” for geek culture, the magazine published 374 issues before ending its original run in April 2009.
Now, the publication is reviving its legacy with Issue #375, a 100-page anniversary edition, backed by Fangoria Holdings, the company known for its horror publication, Fangoria. This relaunch aims to maintain Starlog’s deep-rooted connection to science fiction enthusiasts while expanding its scope to cover the intersection of science fiction, emerging technology, and real-world issues.
Editorial Leadership
The new issue will be headed by Editor-in-Chief Annalee Newitz, a respected science journalist, science fiction author, and founding editor of io9. The revived Starlog will not solely focus on Hollywood entertainment news; it will also delve into a broader array of topics, including orbital space farming, soft robotics, and the intricate politics behind Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Exclusive Features
The premiere issue includes an exclusive interview with Star Trek icon LeVar Burton, featuring insights alongside particle physicist Chanda Prescod-Weinstein. Additionally, the cover of the anniversary edition showcases original artwork by Gabriel Yeganyan, who has previously contributed to design projects for Star Wars.
Expanding the Brand
The Starlog revival doesn’t stop with its annual print publication. The brand is also set to launch The Starlog Podcast, hosted by Jordan Hoffman and Dave Gonzales, alongside a weekly newsletter titled The Lodestar.
