Fans of collectibles and cinematic reimaginings have much to anticipate with Sony’s upcoming comedy feature, ‘Anaconda,’ which promises a fresh and engaging take on a beloved cult classic. During a recent presentation at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, director Tom Gormican alongside cast member Selton Mello unveiled four new clips from the film, set for release on December 25. This unique project reinterprets the 1997 horror film of the same name, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, and Daniela Melchior.
Gormican and Mello clarified that this film does not intend to act as a traditional remake or reboot of the original ‘Anaconda,’ which starred Jennifer Lopez and Jon Voight. Instead, the narrative follows a group of friends passionate about the original film, who embark on creating their own version while navigating the absurdities and challenges that come with their cinematic ambitions.
“They’re failed filmmakers who decide to make this movie because of their passion for the original Anaconda,” Gormican explained, referring to the central characters Griff (played by Rudd) and Doug (played by Black). This project is positioned as a meta-commentary on the original movie, celebrating its legacy while forging a new and distinct storyline.
One of the clips showcased Mello’s character, a Brazilian snake handler sharing the darkly humorous anecdote about his grandmother’s unfortunate encounter with an anaconda. Another clip depicts the friends in a nighttime brainstorming session, revealing their quirky ideas for the script, such as a pivotal scene involving a double head-butt. This blend of humor and adventure recommends the film for a wide audience, creating potential appeal for collectors and fans alike.
Gormican described the movie’s tone as one of grand adventure intertwined with comedic elements, emphasizing its offbeat and unpredictable nature. Given this unique framing, there’s a strong possibility that the film could resonate well within the collectible community, especially if it ignites a renewed interest in themed merchandise surrounding the ‘Anaconda’ franchise.
When asked about the potential for subsequent films in the ‘Anaconda’ series, Gormican noted that the film’s narrative structure could indeed support additional stories, depending largely on audience reception upon its release. While key stars Black and Rudd were absent from the presentation, they contributed video messages to honor Mello for his recent accolade at the event, further indicating that this film is ready to engage and expand its viewing audience.
