Sam Worthington Weighs in on Future of 'Avatar' After 'Fire and Ash'

The future of the ‘Avatar’ franchise hangs in a delicate balance as industry expectations for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ reach new heights. Sam Worthington, the franchise’s lead, offered his insights at the film’s recent premiere, emphasizing the critical stakes involved in this latest installment.

James Cameron stirred conversation by expressing openness to stepping back from the franchise if ‘Fire and Ash’ does not achieve substantial box office success. In a candid discussion on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, he explored the phenomenon of ‘sequelitis,’ pointing out the declining number of moviegoers compared to when he launched the original ‘Avatar’ over two decades ago. Even considering the monumental success of both the 2009 original and 2022’s ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, Cameron remained focused on the financial realities of filmmaking. He stated, “Each film costs one metric fuck-ton of money, which means we have to make two metric fuck-tons of money to make a profit. I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will make money; the question is does it make enough money to do it again?” He affirmed his willingness to step away if necessary, commenting on the potential finality of this chapter: “If this is where it ends, cool.”

As part of the franchise’s core ensemble alongside Zoe Saldaña, Worthington shared his thoughts with The Hollywood Reporter, noting, “I think Jim’s right; you’re after a movie that your hope is that it connects, and it’s very nerve-racking when you hand a movie over. We’ll see. [His character] Jake Sully said at the end of Avatar 2, ‘This is where we make our stand,’ so I think we know what’s coming. To me, this was always the final battle, the final showdown.” He acknowledged Cameron’s vision for the franchise while highlighting the extent to which the current narrative has been crafted to potentially conclude the saga.

Stephen Lang, reprising his role as the antagonist, expressed an optimistic perspective, asserting that the story has further depth yet to be explored: “There’s so much more saga to tell and I know how deeply invested Jim Cameron is in this story and these families that are in this film. I think there can be a break, but we’ve done that before; we’ve taken long breaks. But in the words of a great, great American, we’ll be back,” he stated, humorously channeling a classic Arnold Schwarzenegger quote.

Despite Cameron enjoying the premiere festivities, he reiterated his focus on the present project: “I’m not even thinking about four and five, are you kidding me? I’m unemployed right now. Ask me in a year, we’ll talk about it.” This reflects a pragmatic approach from the director, who has completed drafts for the fourth and fifth installments, with preliminary scenes from the fourth movie already filmed in conjunction with ‘The Way of Water’ and ‘Fire and Ash’.

Jack Champion, who plays Worthington’s son, noted, “We filmed a lot of prequel scenes and I just hope that audiences get to see them because they are crazy,” indicating a strong desire from the cast to continue the series beyond the current film.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ is set to hit theaters on December 19, and its performance will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of the franchise moving forward.
