The latest update from acclaimed director Ryan Coogler highlights a significant opportunity for potential expansions within the Sinners universe, which might resonate well with collectors and retailers alike.

Writer-director Ryan Coogler has been at the helm of some of the biggest blockbusters of the past 10 years. Naturally, he catapulted onto the global stage by helping Marvel Studios figure out how to bring Black Panther to the screen. But his work on indie films (Fruitvale Station) and other familiar franchises (the Creed movies) have made Coogler a household name.
Earlier this year, Coogler teamed with his frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle, Creed) for Sinners, a vampire story set in the Deep South that had Jordan playing twin brothers trying to open a Juke Joint, and running into all sorts of problems.
Those who have seen the movie know that the end contains a time jump for two very important characters (I’ll leave their identities out, in case you somehow got this far and haven’t yet watched Sinners, which you absolutely need to go see ASAP). What that meant to me, as a viewer, is that Coogler left a lot of potential storytelling in the void.
So when the director and his actor stopped by CBR’s official Heroes Journey podcast, I asked Coogler if he’d ever been approached to tell more stories in the Sinners universe, specifically using the art form of comic books, the director surprised me when he confirmed:
Yes! I have been approached. Mike very famously loves Anime and Manga. But I’m a comic book dude myself, specifically American comic books and graphic novels. A lot of the storyboard artists that I work with are comic book fans. One of my boy artists had brought up that somebody had asked him about it. It was Louis (Gonzales). Somebody had asked Louis… they were looking at his boards and going, ‘Hey, is there a comic book here?’ So yeah, it’s a question that’s been floated before, for sure.
