Row K Entertainment has secured the U.S. distribution rights to the much-anticipated Cliffhanger reboot, featuring action icons Pierce Brosnan and Lily James.
This major acquisition, part of an eight-figure deal finalized at the Toronto Film Festival, is expected to provide a significant platform for director Jaume Collet-Serra’s reimagining of the classic 1993 action film originally starring Sylvester Stallone. The film is slated for a wide theatrical release in 2026.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Dolomites in Italy, the narrative follows mountaineer Ray Cooper, portrayed by Brosnan, who operates a chalet with his daughter. The plot intensifies when they are kidnapped, forcing his older daughter Naomi (James) to confront her traumatic past in a bid to rescue her family.
Having recently completed filming in Austria, the project is currently in post-production. This reboot promises to harness both nostalgic and contemporary elements, appealing to both fans of the original and a new generation of viewers.
In their statement, Row K co-chairmen Christopher Woodrow and Raj Singh remarked, “Cliffhanger is an exciting addition to Row K’s growing slate and a clear example of the kind of event-level films we are bringing to the marketplace.”
Originally, Cliffhanger, released in May 1993 by TriStar Pictures, garnered $255 million at the global box office. The film featured Stallone as a mountain climber enlisted to recover suitcases filled with stolen cash in the Rocky Mountains.
The producers behind this reimagined film include Lars Sylvest, Joe Neurauter, Thorsten Schumacher, Neal Moritz, and Toby Jaffe. The acquisition deal was negotiated for the filmmakers by CAA Media Finance, which is also representing domestic rights, while international sales are being handled by Rocket Science.
