Remo Girone, best known for his role as a mob boss in the iconic Italian television series La Piovra and his portrayal of Enzo Ferrari in James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari, has died at the age of 76.
Girone succumbed to complications from bladder cancer on Friday, passing away in his home in Monte Carlo. The news was first reported by La Repubblica.
In addition to his work in television, American audiences will also recognize Girone for his role as Maso Pescatore, another mafia figure, in the 2016 crime drama Live by Night, directed by and starring Ben Affleck. His recent work included a role as a doctor assisting Denzel Washington’s character in The Equalizer 3 (2023).
Girone made his mark on the Italian landscape when he joined the acclaimed series La Piovra in its third season in 1987, playing the corrupt banker Gaetano “Tano” Cariddi, a character inspired by real-life figures such as Michele “The Shark” Sindona. He was featured prominently in many seasons that aired until 2001 when health issues stemming from his cancer treatments forced him to take a hiatus.
In Ford v Ferrari, Girone masterfully depicted Enzo Ferrari as a man who governed his empire with a blend of nobility and intimidation, drawing parallels to a mafia boss in his demeanor. According to THR‘s reviewer Todd McCarthy, Girone portrayed a character that exuded quality, prestige, and authority.
Born on December 1, 1948, in Eritrea to Italian parents, he pursued acting at the Silvio d’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome. Girone’s career spanned decades, with work across stage and screen commencing in the mid-1970s, primarily within Italy.
In recognition of his contributions to cinema, Girone was honored with lifetime achievement awards from the Venice International Film Festival and the Flaiano Film Festival in 2021.
He is survived by his wife, actress Victoria Zinny, whom he married in 1982, along with his stepchildren, Veronica and Karl.
