Mattel Shares Surge as Authentic Brands Group Explores Potential $6 Billion Takeover

Date:

Mattel could potentially be headed toward a major ownership change.Shares of the company behind Barbie, Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe and numerous other toy brands jumped Thursday following reports that Authentic Brands Group has expressed interest in acquiring Mattel.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the takeover interest, while Reuters subsequently reported that an acquisition could potentially value Mattel at approximately $6 billion or more. Discussions remain preliminary, and there is currently no guarantee that an agreement will be reached.

The news comes just one day after Mattel announced a major leadership change. Roger Lynch, CEO of Condé Nast, is set to take over as Mattel CEO, succeeding Ynon Kreiz.

The potential interest in Mattel also comes at a time when the company has continued expanding the reach of its toy portfolio. Over the last several years, Mattel has secured or expanded major licensing relationships involving properties including DC and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, giving the company access to some of the biggest characters in comics and pop culture.

At the same time, Mattel continues to invest heavily in its own intellectual properties, including Barbie, Hot Wheels and Masters of the Universe. That strategy extends beyond the toy aisle as Mattel works to transform its brands into larger entertainment franchises. One major example is 2026’s Masters of the Universe theatrical movie, bringing Mattel’s long-running He-Man franchise back to the big screen.

That combination of internally owned brands and major outside licenses gives Mattel a substantial presence across toys, collectibles and entertainment, adding another layer of significance to reports of takeover interest from Authentic Brands Group.

Mattel’s stock reacted sharply to the acquisition report, finishing Thursday approximately 19% higher, according to The Wall Street Journal.

For collectors, a potential acquisition would naturally raise questions about what new ownership could eventually mean for Mattel’s extensive portfolio of toy and entertainment properties. For now, however, no acquisition has been announced, and discussions are reportedly still at an early stage.
