The beloved characters of the X-Men franchise are poised for a significant resurgence in cinema with the eagerly awaited 2026 release of Avengers: Doomsday. This film may also explore the highly speculated adaptation of Avengers vs. X-Men. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has hinted that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will seek to introduce new interpretations of these iconic mutant characters, presenting opportunities for a fresh cast. Among those expressing interest is a distinguished comic book movie veteran.

During his appearance at New York Comic Con, Laurence Fishburne candidly revealed his enthusiasm for the role of Charles Xavier in the upcoming MCU X-Men reboot. This intriguing prospect arose during a panel discussion, where Fishburne, alongside his The Matrix co-star Joe Pantoliano, responded to host Josh Horowitz’s inquiry regarding his dream roles.
“I know that they’re discussing the X-Men now, and I want one of two things. The first is: what do you think about Laurence Fishburne as Professor X?” he proposed, sparking excitement among fans.
Fishburne’s casting as Professor X would undoubtedly create a stir, especially considering the lasting impact of Sir Patrick Stewart’s portrayal of the character, both definitive and revered—paralleled only by Hugh Jackman’s legendary interpretation of Wolverine. Notably, the audience at NYCC responded enthusiastically, demonstrating their support for the original Morpheus from The Matrix to step into this iconic role.
Should Fishburne’s reinvention of Professor X materialize, it would not mark his first foray into the MCU realm. The Academy Award nominee, recognized for his role as Ike Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do with It, made his MCU debut in 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp as Dr. Bill Foster, a pivotal figure in the storyline related to Ava “Ghost” Starr.
Historically, it is not uncommon for actors to embody multiple roles within the expansive MCU. Notable examples include Sean Gunn, who portrayed both Rocket Raccoon (in performance capture) and Kraglin in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Similarly, Robert Downey Jr. is set to portray Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, even after his initial tenure as Iron Man. Fishburne follows in the footsteps of numerous MCU actors expressing interest in new roles, similar to David Dastmalchian, who recently voiced his desire to play Morbius.
Notably, Fishburne’s MCU experience predates his debut as Bill Foster, as he previously reprised his role as Perry White from Man of Steel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. With a portfolio rich in comic book adaptations, Fishburne has carved a unique space in Hollywood as an actor with multiple Marvel characters to his credit, dating back to his voicing of the humanoid alien in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He also voiced characters in Disney Channel’s animated series Moon Girl and the Devil Dinosaur, showcasing both his reprisal of Bill Foster and the mischievous Beyonder.
Furthermore, it is essential to acknowledge Fishburne’s history in comic book adaptations, including notable characters such as Morpheus from The Matrix and Ronald Noland from the 2010 film Predators. Beyond these roles, he stands out as one of the most prolific actors in comic book cinema, and introducing him as the MCU’s Professor X would undoubtedly enhance his impressive career.
