KPop Demon Hunters 2: A Sequel Set to Impact Collectibles and Retail Dynamics

KPop Demon Hunters 2 is officially in development, signaling potential shifts in the collectibles market as Netflix solidifies contracts with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, as well as Sony Animation for the highly anticipated sequel. Sources confirm that while talent agreements are still in progress, Bloomberg’s initial reporting indicates that the release could occur in 2029. This timeline aligns with industry trends observed in animated features, as seen with the substantial gap between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and its follow-up, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).

Despite the absence of comments from Netflix and Sony regarding the film’s specifics, the original KPop Demon Hunters has made history as Netflix’s most popular title to date. The narrative follows Huntrix, a K-pop girl group composed of three members who also battle monsters emerging from the underworld. The series’ chart-topping success is further reflected in its soundtrack, which has enjoyed a sustained presence in the top 10 of the Billboard 200.

Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that discussions for a sequel were underway, and since then, KPop Demon Hunters has had two theatrical releases, including a sing-along version. The film returned to theaters during the recent Halloween weekend at major chains such as AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, among others worldwide. The sing-along version previously had a successful release in August, earning an estimated $17 million to $18 million in box office revenue, although Netflix has not disclosed exact figures.

The vocal talents behind Huntrix—Ejae, Rei Ami, and Audrey Nuna—have remained active, especially with award season approaching, where the film is favored to compete in categories for animated features and original songs. The trio has also been promoting their popular track with live performances on Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Notably, it was announced recently that Huntrix will also make an appearance in the upcoming Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
