IDW Publishing is making significant strides in 2025 with the establishment of a new shared universe centered around Godzilla comics. The flagship series, spearheaded by writer Tim Seeley and artist Nikola Cizmesija, is set to redefine the kaiju narrative. In a bold move, Godzilla #6 will unveil an unprecedented event: the death of Godzilla, accompanied by a cover that pays homage to one of the most iconic images in comic book history.

Godzilla #6 features cover art by renowned artist Dan Jurgens, inker Brett Breeding, and colorist Glenn Whitmore, all of whom collaborated on the cover of the best-selling Superman #75 in 1992. This fresh cover serves as a poignant tribute to the unforgettable image of Lois Lane cradling a deceased Man of Steel.
While it may seem unconventional to eliminate the title character so early in a new Godzilla narrative, IDW is forthcoming about this decision being an integral part of an evolving story arc. Fans can anticipate the return of Godzilla in issue #7, reimagined as the Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla.
Dan Jurgens embraced the opportunity to create a special ‘Death of Godzilla’ cover, stating to IGN, “When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility… I was definitely up for it. I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was great fun to be able to contribute!”
Aaron John Gregory, Godzilla Product Development Manager, commented, “Allowing IDW to ‘kill’ Godzilla only six issues into the new Kai-Sei Era series demonstrates the profound trust TOHO International has in both acclaimed writer Tim Seeley and Eisner-winning editor Jake Williams. Such monumental comic events must be approached with care. My experience as a young teen waiting in line for Superman #75 has shaped my expectations, and I can assure fans that the incredible team behind our Kai-Sei era of Godzilla is delivering electrifying excitement and compelling storytelling.”
Kristin Parcell, General Manager of Toho International, articulated the vision for the series: “Our goal is always to expand and reimagine the Godzilla mythology in bold and meaningful ways. The IDW comics line exemplifies that vision, offering stories that challenge expectations, captivate fans, and continue to evolve the legacy of the King of the Monsters.”
Godzilla #6 is scheduled for release on January 7, 2026, with a preorder deadline set for November 24. Fans can secure a copy at their local comic shop.
