Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Takes Direct Oversight of Wizards of the Coast Following John Hight’s Exit

Date:

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks is stepping back into the day-to-day operations of Wizards of the Coast, taking direct oversight of the company’s gaming division after the departure of WotC president John Hight.

As Hasbro has yet to name a permanent or interim successor for Hight, Wizards’ leadership team will now report directly to Cocks during this transition. This arrangement places two of Hasbro’s most significant entertainment properties, Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, under the direct supervision of the company’s chief executive.

A Return to Familiar Territory

For Cocks, this move marks a return to familiar territory. He previously served as president of Wizards of the Coast from 2016 to 2022 before taking over as Hasbro CEO. Under his leadership at Wizards, the company experienced substantial growth, notably with the expansion of Magic: The Gathering into the digital arena via Magic: The Gathering Arena.

Navigating a Competitive Landscape

Cocks’ renewed involvement comes at a time when Wizards is facing an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape, where tabletop gaming, digital platforms, and major intellectual properties continue to converge.

His track record has made this development closely watched among fans. Cocks’ previous tenure included several controversial decisions within tabletop communities, particularly regarding monetization, changes to Dungeons & Dragons’ Open Gaming License, and Hasbro’s strategy to incorporate external entertainment franchises through its “Universes Beyond” initiative.

Future Implications

This initiative has become a significant aspect of Magic’s business, introducing properties from outside the traditional fantasy and gaming space into the collectible card game. While these crossovers have broadened the franchise’s mainstream appeal, they have also sparked debates among long-time players regarding the brand’s direction and identity.

As Wizards navigates this transition, the immediate concern is whether Cocks’ return signifies a more extensive strategic shift or serves merely to provide stability while Hasbro seeks its next president.
