George R.R. Martin Expresses Frustration Over Delays in Winds of Winter

George R.R. Martin, the renowned creator of Game of Thrones, has been diligently working on The Winds of Winter for an extensive 15 years. However, he is candid about his dissatisfaction regarding the book’s significant delays.

During a panel at New York Comic Con, Martin addressed the ongoing issues surrounding the completion of the sixth volume in his iconic series, A Song of Ice and Fire. He expressed his longstanding frustration with failing to meet deadlines, a sentiment shared by many creators under pressure.

“I know there’s all this controversy about Winds of Winter and how late it is, but I’ve always had trouble with deadlines,” he remarked, as reported by Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t feel happy breaching contracts or missing a deadline or anything like that.”

Additionally, he discussed the various projects he has undertaken during the prolonged writing period for Winds of Winter. Martin justified his engagement with alternative creative ventures, emphasizing that his diverse interests fuel his passion for storytelling.

In the fifteen years since the release of A Dance with Dragons, Martin has produced a wealth of material, including:

  • Fire & Blood – A historical account of the Targaryen family
  • The Rogue Prince & The Princess – A novella trilogy exploring the Targaryen legacy
  • Companion books such as The World of Ice & Fire and The Rise of the Dragon
  • Editorial contributions to the celebrated sci-fi anthology series, Wild Cards

Beyond the realm of literature, Martin played a pivotal role in crafting the expansive lore for the critically acclaimed video game, Elden Ring. His works have also been successfully adapted into various screen projects, including HBO’s popular House of the Dragon, as well as other adaptations like the horror series Nightflyers and the fantasy film In the Lost Lands.

Despite his busy schedule with numerous media projects, Martin remains acutely aware of the scrutiny he faces every time he announces new work unrelated to A Song of Ice and Fire. “Every time that happens, and I announce it on my website, half the internet goes crazy,” he quipped, illustrating the mixed reactions to his diverse undertakings.

In relation to his ongoing contributions, Martin confirmed his involvement in various projects, including the aforementioned Wild Cards and the AMC series Dark Winds, where he serves as an executive producer. Most recently, he joined the production team for an upcoming animated adaptation of Hercules. “My various projects are akin to my children, which I love equally,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to all his creative endeavors.

Ultimately, Martin reassured fans of his dedication to Winds of Winter, stating, “Yes, I do love Winds of Winter. I’m still interested in it, I’m still working on it, but honestly, I love these other things, too.” His ongoing efforts signify a commitment to deliver a rich narrative, although he acknowledged the uncertainty that surrounds the completion timeline.

In December 2024, Martin reiterated that Winds of Winter remains a priority, despite acknowledging the doubts expressed by fans about whether the series would ever be concluded. “A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”
