Final Fantasy Title Set to Conclude Operations in October

Square Enix Logo

Square Enix has announced that a Final Fantasy title will cease operations on October 30, marking a significant moment for fans of the franchise. Enthusiasts have enjoyed a remarkable array of releases, including Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion. Looking ahead, anticipation builds for upcoming projects such as Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles and the third installment of Final Fantasy VII Remake, as well as news surrounding Final Fantasy XVII. However, the journey has not always been smooth for dedicated fans.

The 2010s marked a challenging period for the Final Fantasy series, widely regarded as one of its least favorable eras. Among the titles that struggled during this time was Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, a mobile game that debuted in 2015. Although the title enjoyed a brief stay in the market, it experienced its own service discontinuation in the United States and Europe on October 30, 2024, while continuing to operate in Japan until now. As of October 31, 2025, this title will officially conclude operation in Japan as well.

Grand Finale Campaign Live Until Shutdown

Before the upcoming shutdown, Square Enix is launching a Grand Finale Campaign for Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius. Additionally, the company has confirmed plans to release a Memorial Edition prior to the service discontinuation.

In their statement, Square Enix expressed gratitude to players, stating, “Thank you very much for always playing Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius. We have decided to end the service as of 12:00 on Friday, October 31, 2025. We sincerely thank all of you who have played with us for such a long time. Until the end, we will be holding the ‘Grand Finale Campaign’ as a token of our gratitude, and after the end, while it will be limited to the Apple/Google versions, we plan to distribute a Memorial Edition. We would be delighted if you could continue to enjoy it until the very last moment.”

A Spin-Off About to Be Lost to Time

Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius is a free-to-play spin-off developed by Alim, originally released in Japan in 2015 and later made available to Western audiences in 2016. With over 40 million downloads, the game struggled to gain a substantial following despite Square Enix’s efforts to enhance player engagement through crossover events. Critically, it received mixed reviews, as evidenced by its Metacritic score of 73. This mixed reception, alongside its earlier discontinuation in Western markets, foreshadowed the decision to conclude operations in Japan.
