The upcoming release of Absolute Batman #21 promises significant implications for collectors and fans of the series, as it showcases reimagined versions of two of Batman’s most formidable adversaries, Two-Face and Penguin.

Nick Dragotta & Scott Snyder On Absolute Batman

Solicitations for Absolute Batman #21, set to hit shelves this June, offer an inaugural glimpse at the newly designed Absolute Two-Face and Absolute Penguin. Both characters, once allies of Bruce Wayne, have undergone significant transformation at the hands of the Absolute Joker, who has subjected them to chilling experiments that challenge their very identities.

Nick Dragotta, the artist behind the designs, expresses enthusiasm for the new take on Two-Face, stating, “Absolute Two-Face. Flipping hair and coins. Maybe my favorite design of the bunch. Shout out Bill Finger and Bruce Timm.” This new incarnation visually nods to his origins while embracing an innovative style.

In the narrative, this updated Harvey Dent has not only had his physical appearance altered but is also depicted as suffering from callosal syndrome—a condition that may lead to fragmented consciousness due to the bifurcation of his brain. This element adds a layer of depth to the character, highlighting the psychological ramifications of his transformation. As Scott Snyder elaborates, “what I love about him is he evokes the animated series version, which is one of my very favorite designs ever, but he’s also very much ours. Nick came up with the long hair both to mimic an antique judge, and so he can use it to hide the side of his face that’s not in control.”

Meanwhile, the fate of Oswald Cobblepot, the legendary Penguin, is equally compelling. His body has been significantly altered, with references to grotesque forms reminiscent of Kevin Smith’s film Tusk. Dragotta notes, “Absolute Penguin finally gets on his feet. Still tinkering. I liked the initial design sheet pose, had to use it for a cover.” Snyder further teases, “Penguin still has some surprises to them. We haven’t revealed yet, different crutches, more style, and jewellery and such :)” These character developments not only engage long-time fans but also present vital points of interest for collectors focusing on design evolution and variant art.
