AMC Theatres is adjusting its seating policy to reward loyalty program members, which could influence attendance patterns and pricing strategies within the cinema industry. The initiative, set to roll out later this year, will reserve the best seats exclusively for members of the A-List and Stubs Premiere loyalty programs. This means that moviegoers interested in prime seating for popular films, such as the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, will need to subscribe to these programs, which start at $17.99 a month.
CEO Adam Aron highlighted this new direction during an earnings call, emphasizing that the reserved seating will not incur additional fees. Instead, it aims to enhance the experience for frequent visitors. “AMC will introduce preferred premier seating, where we will block and reserve the best seats in the house in our theaters to be accessed first by our A-List and our Stubs Premiere members — that’s the two VIP tiers within our Stubs program — at no added charge,” Aron stated.
This strategic move aligns with broader trends in the entertainment industry, where companies are increasingly looking to cater to loyal customers through exclusive perks. By ensuring that premium seating is available primarily to those investing in loyalty programs, AMC seeks not only to enhance customer satisfaction but also to strengthen brand loyalty among its frequent patrons.
As the A-List and Stubs Premiere programs currently offer benefits such as up to four free movies a week and complimentary large popcorn refills, the reserved seating initiative can be perceived as an additional incentive rather than a barrier. However, this approach may raise concerns similar to those from AMC’s previous attempt with the Sightline program, which faced criticism for establishing a tiered pricing model reminiscent of concert venue practices. Actor Elijah Wood notably criticized Sightline as undermining the universal accessibility of cinemas.
While AMC’s latest initiative has the potential to further segment the audience, framing it as a reward for loyal customers highlights the company’s commitment to fostering a robust relationship with its most engaged moviegoers. The discourse surrounding these changes underscores the ongoing evolution in how cinemas operate and how they might balance profitability with equitable access to entertainment experiences.
